Helmet Law to Be Repealed?
This may be the year that the helmet law gets repealed. I know many of you have heard this statement for years. This time it's actually serious. Two bills are pending in the Michigan Legislature to repeal the helmet law. Richard LeBlanc, a legislator from Westland introduced a bill to let motorcyclists ride without a helmet under certain conditions. If you are 21 or older and carry at least $20,000 in personal injury insurance, you would be able to ride without a helmet.
The second bill, Senate Bill 291, would allow riders 21 and older who have passed an accredited motorcycle safety course or have had a motorcycle endorsement on their license for 2 years, will be allowed to ride without a helmet.
This is a personal choice issue. On every occasion I have ridden down to Ohio with a group of friends, we have pulled off the freeway immediately after passing the sign indicating Ohio and most of the guys take their helmets off. I, personally leave mine on. That's my choice. That's their choice.
I have, over the years, talked to a lot of you who ask "when are they getting rid of the helmet law?" Well, this may finally be the time. If you're serious about ditching the helmet law, put yourself to some use, and contact your legislator. This is your time. Sitting on the sideline won't do it.
